Isadora v1.2.9 (MacOSX) and 0.9b6 (Windows)
READ ME!!! QUICKTIME 7.2 BUG WORKAROUND
- Apple introduced a bug in QuickTime 7.2 that prevents sound from playing properly in Isadora. This version addresses this problem with a workaround that disabled non-essential features but allows sound to play. This workaround can be disabled in the preferences. For more information, read here.
READ ME!!! VERY IMPORTANT INSTALLTION NOTE FOR MAC OS X!
- In Isadora 1.2.8 we corrected a bug where the Isadora Installer required administrator access during installation. Due to this fix, you may not be able to update your existing application using this installer. To ensure installation functions properly, please rename the Isadora folder in Applications to something else, e.g., "IsadoraOld", before installing.
THIS IS A PRE-RELEASE VERSION
- This is a pre-release version. It has been deemed stable, but there still may be the occaisional bug. We strongly recommend that you back up your files before saving them in the new version. Once you do, you will not be able to load the files in previous versions of Isadora.

New Features
- Quartz Composer Plugins - Billboard Output: You can now access the resulting image if a Quartz Composer plugin only renders to the Billboard. If a QC Plugin has no video outlets, then Isadora automatically adds a video output that is the image seen on the Billboard.
- 3D Rect Project Outputs to 3D Renderer Actor: the 3D Rect Project actor now has a "to stage" input that allows you to render to the stage or to the 3D Renderer actor.
- The Sound Player actor now has a "stop" input which stops playback.
Bug Fixes (MacOS X and Windows)
User Actors:
- User Outputs in a User Actor no longer inappropriately transmit their values when the User Actor's Scene is activated.
Media:
- If you renamed or moved a media file while Isaora was running it could cause an assertion error. Now, if the media file is renamed or moved, it will appear is unresolved in the media window.
Editing:
- Dragging Scenes no longer leaves the wrong scene activated.
- Inserting a Control no longer jumps to the first scene associated with the current control panel.
- Checking the "init" box on the Trigger String actor no longer crashes the application.
Control Panel:
- Isadora no longer crashes if the Control Panel was set to use a background picture from the Media Window, and the picture could not be loaded upon opening the file.
Bug Fixes (MacOS X only)

New Features
- Serail In Watcher : This new actor (which is available in two flavors, Text and Binary) allows you to read serial data received on one of Isadora's Serial (RS-232) Input/Output ports. Flexible pattern matching allows you pick out values from the data and output them in a variety of formats. To edit the pattern matching stringt, you double-click the actor. A new "Help" button at the bottom left of the dialog will open documentation for pattern matching format. The Text version of the actor relies on a special character to mark the end of a block of data; the binary version counts the number of bytes received to determine the beginning and/or ending of a block.
Bug Fixes (MacOS X and Windows)
Media:
- Isadora now stores the full path to the media files under Mac OS X. Previously, files stored on external volumes wound not always be found.
Controls:
- READ ME! The data associated with the Edit Text control (including Control IDs) is now correctly stored on Intel Macintoshes. You may need check the Control IDs when loading files in Intel Macintoshes, as they may no longer be correct after this fix!!!
- Strange redraw problems when updating the text of an Edit Text control have been fixed.
Editing:
- When pasting a single scene, the scene is now correctly activated after the paste
- After undoing or redoing a drag in the Media Window, the Scene active at the time of the drag is correctly re-activated.
- Actor inputs coming from a User Input are now always properly updated after editing a User Actor and choosing “Save & Update All”. Previously, if you made a change to a User Actor and chose “Save & Update All”, the values of all actors inside the User Actor were set to match the copy you just edited. This was correct, but then upon activating a scene, the User Input values were not being sent into the User Actor, causing incorrect behavior.
- Enabling the “init value” for a User Input of a User Actor now correctly sends the value to to the input when the actor’s scene is activated.
- Renaming a bin to an empty string in the Media Window no longer crashes Isadora.
- When undoing a change to the number of inputs for an actor (e.g., the Table actor) any values that were discarded due to the change are now restored.
Actors:
- The Send Serial Actor now correctly transmits hex FF
- The Selector actor now correctly passes values past input 17.
- Deleteing all of the characters you've typed in the Actor Find text box no longer crashes Isadora.
Bug Fixes (MacOS X only)
Core Video & Audio:
- Several error conditions that could come up in certain Core Audio setups have been fixed.
- Core Video actors now render properly, even if they only have a video output.
- The AUVarispeed unit has two inputs: rate and pitch. They actually are just two versions of the same value; if the pitch was set to 0, it would override the rate setting, and thus the pitch would have no effect when the actor was activated. To solve this problem, when you change either the rate or pitch, the other parameter is automatically set to the equivalent value. This ensures that the speed change will take effect when the AUVarispeed audio unit is initialized.
- When initailzing an Audio Unit patch containing an AUSoundFilePlayer, Isadora no longer throws an assertion error if the Sound File Player does not have a valid sound file specified.
- Connecting AU Sound Input directly to SystemOutputUnit no longer throws an assertion error.
- Setting the intensity of the CI Projector to 0 no longer throws an assertion error.
- You can no longer connect a core audio output to a core video input. (Ooops!)

Isadora v1.2.7 (MacOSX) and 0.9b50 (Windows)
New Features
- Multiple Undo: Isadora now supports unlimited undo/redo operations. (Hooray!) This new feature also solves several relatively uncommon but nevertheless real crashes that would occur if, for instance, you were to undo an edit operation performed the Cue List or Media window from the main window, especially if the those windows were closed.
- User Actors: This version includes a major update to the way User Actors behave. You now have the option of synchronizing all instances (copies) of a User Actor after you make an edit. This functionality now works as I always intended, but also introduces a new way of thinking about User Actors. So, if you use User Actors, it would be very important to review the chapter on User Actors in the Isadora 1.3 Preliminary manual, which can be downloaded from http://www.troikatronix.com/files/isadora13-prelim-manual.zip
- Sleep Interval: The "Sleep Interval" parameter in the "General" tab of the Preferences has been replaced by a pop-up menu called "General Service Tasks". Instead of specifying the period of the sleep interval in milliseconds, you now choose a multiple of the frame rate to determine how often non-video tasks are performed. (There are technical reasons why it is better this way.) The new dialog reports the period in milliseconds based on the current frame rate and the General Service Task frequency, in case that is important to you.
- Global Variables: while no specific functionality for this was added this version, the new implementation of the User Actors offers this possibility. If you need global variables, just create a User Actor with one or more Enter Scene Value actors inside, each connected to a User Output. If you choose to synchronize after editing such an actor, all instances of the User Actor will be updated, thus ensuring that every scene with that actor will receive the same values.
- More Target Frame Rates: You may now also choose frame rates of 45, 60, and 75. Don't know if this is really useful, but if you're doing lots of OpenGL stuff, it can actually be good to go to these frames rates. If you're playing a lot of movies, however, I don't advise it.
- Chroma/Luma Key Alpha Input: The Chroma Key and Luminance Key actors now have a new 'alpha' input which causes the key to be applied to the alpha channel of the output image. This allows you to do compositing of the image using the embedded alpha channel.
- Slider Control Updates: You can now control the size of the "thumb" in the Slider control -- either to be a specified size, or to use the default method available previously. (For non-picture sliders, 10 pixels; for picture sliders, the size of the picture.)
- Control Actor Split: You can now drag the Control/Actor Split to adjust the width of the respective views.
- Reset to Default Values command in the Actors menu is now undoable.
- Command H for Hide: The keyboard equivalent for the Hide Values Command in the Actors menu has been changed to Command/Ctrl-Y to free up Command/Ctrl-H on Mac OS X.
- User Actor, User Input, User Output, and new "Macro" actor now always appear at the top of the toolbox in Group 8.
- The Toggle actor now has an 'init' input, that allows you to initialize the output value to a specified state. (You can also choose "none").
Bug Fixes (MacOS X and Windows)
General:
- Isadora now disables Keyboard Watchers when a modal dialog is open (e.g., the Control Settings dialog). This was a problem if you had a Keyboard Watcher with the 'direction' input set to 'up', which was in turn attached to a Jump actor. Jumping to a new scene while a dialog was open could lead to a crash.
- It was possible to jump from a scene in a couple of situations where you were editing a dialog (e.g., editing control settings) and you could somehow programmatically jump from the scene, leading to a crash. This has been fixed for all of the situations I know about.
- In tandem with the new User Actor features, the long standing issue of conflicting IDs when adding User Actor files to your global User Actors folder has been solved. This has required, however, a new extension for the User Actor file (".iua" for Isadora User Actor) as previous versions of Isadora cannot read these files. The current version remains capable to read ".iza" User Actor files.
Actors:
- The Send Serial Data, Send Raw MIDI, and String Formatter actors can now be shared between PowerPC and Intel processors. Previously the data in these actors would become corrupted upon moving between processors. (There was no issue when reading files on the same processor type.) The new version will read these actors will correctly on any processor, except in this specific case: when the data in the actor consists only of the values hex 00, 01, or 02. If there is any other data (i.e., ASCII text of any kind, or a parameter value [P1-P9]) then the data will be correctly interpreted.
- The order in which Isadora initializes actors within a User Actor (and any nested User Actors) has been improved to prevent crashes. Previously, it was possible that a nested actor could receive a trigger before all of its inputs were initialized, which could lead to crashes. (This bug was evidenced by the LanBox User Actors available at lanbox.com)
- Fixed a bug in the Luminance Key actor the 'softness' parameter was not being correctly applied.
- The OSC Port Number can now be set from 0-65535. Previously you could only set it to a range of 0 to 9999.
Editing:
- When editing an input value via the slider, Isadora now correctly erases the contents of the slider's number box if you type a value after dragging in the number box.
Snapshots:
- Isadora no longer crashes if you attempt to recall a snapshot that would cause a Jump actor to jump to another scene.
3D Actors
- Isadora no longer crashes when sending a video stream into a 3D Player that is playing a 3D Model that has one or more surfaces with no texture map assigned to it.
- The default global lighting, when no 3D Light Orientation actor is present, is now initialized to the correct default values.
Controls:
- When editing a Control's Settings, you can now set the 'On Value' or 'Off Value' to a number with a decimal point.
Bug Fixes (MacOS Only)
- Long file names are now correctly displayed in the main document window.
- Using Command-H on MacOS X to hide the application now works as expected.
- The Midi Player actor now plays correctly on Mac OS X.
Core Video Bug Fixes (MacOS Only)
- Fixed several bugs having to do with QC (.qtz) files imported into Isadora as plugins.
Core Audio (MacOS Only)
- Isadora no longer crashes when opening an audio unit is unsuccessful. (This could commonly happen for demo plugins that had timed out.)
- Isadora is now compatible with Cycling '74's "Pluggo" Audio Unit component.
- Isadora no longer crashes if an audio unit has more than 64 inputs.
Bug Fixes (Windows Only)
- Fixed a bug where the Chroma Key and Luminance Key actors would draw the indicator in the middle of the actor incorrectly.
- Isadora would sometimes crash when importing a picture with an odd pixel width.
- You can now enter a negative number in for Minimum or Maximum value in the for Controls that have these inputs.
Known Bugs
- The following features are not yet implemented under Windows. These features will be implemented before the release of v1.3.
- You cannot use the Capture Control actor to record the live video input stream to a movie, and then have that movie automatically import into the Media Window.
- You cannot set a Custom Capture Size/Cropping Rectangle for the live video input.
- You cannot change the Sound Output Routing for the Sound Player using the Sound Output Setup dialog.
- You cannot echo the Stage to an external Video Out Device using the start External Video Output command.

Isadora v1.2.5 (MacOSX) and 0.9b43 (Windows)
New Features
- A keep aspect input has been added to the Projector, 3D Projector, 3D Quad Distort, and Movie Player Direct actors. When turning this option on, the output on the stage will automatically respect the aspect ratio of the source video image. You can still manipulate the image size using the height, width, and 'aspect mod' (formerly 'aspect') inputs.
- The 'aspect' input on the above mentioned actors has been renamed 'aspect mod' to help keep its meaning distinct from the 'keep aspect' input.
- The Movie Player Direct actor now allows you to position and resize the video image within the frame. (Previously, you no option but to fill the entire frame).
- If you right click (or control click on MacOS X) on a media object (movie, picture, etc.) in the media window, you can now choose Reveal in Finder (MacOS X) or “Show in Windows Explorer” (Windows) to display the source file in its enclosing folder.
- You can now increment numeric values by 1/100th instead of 1/10th if you hold down the shift key while dragging inside the numeric value.
- Isadora now searches into any folders located at the same level of the Isadora document for missing media files. If you organize your media files so that they are in folders that reside at the same level of the Isadora document, Isadora will now always automatically find the files on both Mac OS X and Windows. Note that this can cause very long opening times if you, for instance, place Isadora on your desktop and you have many folders on your desktop. This is because they will all be searched for the media.
- Isadora now imports PDF files into the Picture bin.
- Isadora now imports m4a audio files into the Movie bin.
- Added the Show/Hide Stages Actor
- Better auto-scrolling behavior throughout the program when dragging objects.
- The color picker dialog now updates the color ‘live’ so you can immediately see the results.
- The mouse wheel now works for scrolling in Windows version.
- Changed the ‘std’ sound output routing to ‘default’ to reflect the fact that this setting will respect any channel output routing already defined by the file.
- Under Windows, the special color cursors now match Macintosh version.
Mac + Windows Bugs
- You can again type into the Comment actor (this was broken in v1.2.2).
- The perspective feature of the Projector now works correctly. (this was broken in v1.2.2)
- Isadora now correctly interprets OSC multi-value packets correctly on Intel machines (Mac or Windows.)
- The stage is now correctly drawn when activating a scene with a static image (e.g., a picture player connected to a projector actor.)
- Isadora now correctly determines the number of video inputs for a FreeFrame plugin. (It now uses the “maximum input frames” parameter to number the inputs, where it previously used the “minimum input frames” parameter.)
- The channel output routing for sound tracks in movies is not respected when the ‘snd out’ setting is set to std.
- Eyes++ no longer generates an error when attempting to track objects when the min size parameters were set to 0.
- Eyes++ no longer generates multiple errors when attempting to change the number of objects being tracked.
