QuickTime 7.2/7.3 Audio Bug

Apple introduced a serious bug into QuickTime 7.2 that affects playback of audio with movies in Isadora. TroikaTronix has been working with Apple on a fix for this problem, and a solution should appear soon. In the meantime, we have released an update that allows uses to work around this problem.

Audio Bug Workaround

When you run the latest version of Isadora (click here to download) it checks to see if QuickTime 7.2 or later is installed. If it is, it will automatically enable a workaround that allows audio to play properly, but disables certain non-essential features of Isadora. Specifically:

1) The Pause and Resume Engine commands in the Output menu will not stop QuickTime movies from playing

2) You can only use the Record To Stage feature with the Render Speed set to 100%

You may disable the workaround in the Video tab of the Preferences. Upon disabling the workaround, these two features will be restored. But the audio associated with QuickTime movies will not play properly.

If you choose to disable the workaround, Isadora will remind you of this each time you boot the program with a dialog that looks like this:

Using Record to Stage with the Render Speed at less than 100%

If you need to use the Record to Stage feature with the Render Speed set to less than 100%, here is what you will do.

1) Choose Isadora > Preferences (Mac OS X) or Edit > Preferences (Windows). Click on the Video tab. Uncheck the Enable QuickTime 7.2 Sound Bug Workaround checkbox. This disables the workaround.

2) Choose Output > Record Stage Settings. Set the Render Speed text box to the desired render speed.

3) Folow the normal procedure for rendering the stage.

4) Stop recording.

5) Open the Prefences again, click on the Video tab, and re-enable the workaround by checking the Enable QuickTime 7.2 Sound Bug Workaround checkbox

What will happen when the bug is fixed?

As soon as Apple fixes this problem, I will alert all users about the fix. At this point, you will be able to disable the workaround in the preferences, and all features should return to normal.

What if I need the disabled features?

It is possible to revert to QuickTime 7.1.6. Check this article in the TroikaTronix forum for instructions.
